What is Fundamentalism?
Wednesday, 25 June 2014
The subject of Fundamentalism is touchy. I'm not sure why, but it's a topic that ignites emotions. Fundamentalism of any sort sets my skin prickling. I won't hand select the Muslims for my sensitive reaction to this F-word, because although Islamic radicals set the world aflame, Christian fundamentalists also cause untold pain in society. Fundamentalism, in a nutshell, is a militantly rigid adherence to a set of religious principles - the objective is to recapture the ideological purity within the religion. This rigidity within the faith sets fundamentalists apart from other less zealous members of their faith, and it places them in direct opposition with those of other faiths and with secular members of society. In short, they are an intolerant lot.

Why Bertrand Russell is not a Christian
Thursday, 3 July 2014
Maybe you've never read Bertand Russell's "Why I Am Not a Christian," but I have, and although I'm Christian, I like Mr. Russell. He thinks clearly and logically, and makes some very strong points about Christians and their misdeeds. And given his experience with Christians, I do not fault him for his conclusions. He represents the views of many people I know today: his views are much more common now than they were in 1927 when he gave this lecture to the National Secular Society, South London Branch.
Mr. Russell and I do not share the same perspective on God, but I respect his opinion. I'm not the curious sort, and I have a faith in God, that Mr. Russell does not. Christians (as do others of varying religions) spend a lot of time antagonizing others who do not share their same perspective. They preach tolerance, but practice intolerance. Rather than living the Faith, they identify with the dogma of their religion.
"You find as you look around the world that every single bit of
progress in humane feeling, every improvement in the criminal law, every
step toward the diminution of war, every step toward better treatment of
the colored races, or every mitigation of slavery, every moral progress
that there has been in the world, has been consistently opposed by the
organized churches of the world. I say quite deliberately that the Christian
religion, as organized in its churches, has been and still is the principal
enemy of moral progress in the world." - Bertrand Russell, 1927
